Bonderam

Bonderam is an August festival on Divar Island, in the Mandovi river near Panaji, widely known as the Festival of Flags. Each ward of the island builds a float for a village-wide parade, and the day fills with music, dance and mock skirmishes recalling an old dispute with the island's Portuguese-era rulers.

Origins

During Portuguese rule, boundary disputes between neighbouring wards of Divar -- particularly Sao Matias and Piedade -- grew frequent enough that the colonial administration began marking property lines with flags to keep order. Villagers resented having their land divided this way and took to pulling the flags down in protest. The festival's name comes from the Portuguese word for flag, bandeira, and Bonderam has since turned that act of defiance into a yearly celebration rather than a real dispute.

How It's Celebrated

Each of Divar's wards builds an elaborate float depicting a theme from Goan history, culture or mythology, and the floats are paraded through the village accompanied by ghumot drumming and mando dancing. Groups stage playful mock battles with fotash, toy weapons made from bamboo, echoing the old flag skirmishes, while stalls along the route sell Goan dishes such as sorpotel and bebinca.
